Apple Issues Apology Over MobileMe Troubles, Offers Free 30-Day Extension

Wednesday 16th July, 2008 - 20:43 CET

Posted in: Apple News, MobileMe / .Mac

Apple has today sent an email to MobileMe customers with an apology and an automatic 30-day extension to their MobileMe subscription for free. MobileMe launched late last week but suffered issues causing online services to be down for over 24 hours.

Apple also admitted in the email that use of the term “push” when talking about Macs and PCs syncing to the service was misleading.

Below is the email that Apple sent to customers.

We have recently completed the transition from .Mac to MobileMe. Unfortunately, it was a lot rockier than we had hoped.

Although core services such as Mail, iDisk, Sync, Back to My Mac, and Gallery went relatively smoothly, the new MobileMe web applications had lots of problems initially. Fortunately we have worked through those problems and the web apps are now up and running.

Another snag we have run into is our use of the word “push” in describing everything under the MobileMe umbrella. While all email, contact or calendar changes on the iPhone and the web apps are immediately synced to and from the MobileMe “cloud,” changes made on a PC or Mac take up to 15 minutes to sync with the cloud and your other devices. So even though things are indeed instantly pushed to and from your iPhone and the web apps today, we are going to stop using the word “push” until it is near-instant on PCs and Macs, too.

We want to apologize to our loyal customers and express our appreciation for their patience by giving all current subscribers an automatic 30-day extension to their MobileMe subscription free of charge. Your extension will be reflected in your account settings within the next few weeks.
We hope you enjoy your new suite of web applications at me.com, in addition to keeping your iPhone and iPod touch wirelessly in sync with these new web applications and your Mac or PC.

Thank you,
The MobileMe Team

Joswiak Grilled on “Missing” iPhone Features

Tuesday 15th July, 2008 - 23:49 CET

Posted in: Apple News, iPhone

Written by: Alex Brooks

On launch day ExtremeTech was able to speak briefly with Apple’s head of iPod and iPhone marketing, Greg Joswiak. The site was able to ask Joswiak about the lack of copy and paste functionality and David Pogue’s comments last week that the GPS unit was too small for proper navigation.

When asked about the lack of copy and paste functionality on the iPhone, Joswiak didn’t fully dismiss the function, stating that Apple wasn’t against the idea but had a prioritised list of features and were only able to get so far down the list with this product release.

Finally on David Pogue’s comments that the iPhone’s GPS antenna was too small for turn-by-turn navigation, Joswiak stated that this was untrue, continuing that there are many “complicated issues” surround driving applications but ended with “It will evolve. I think our developers will amaze us”.

It has emerged that Apple appears to be testing a newer version of the iPhone 2.0 software which was officially released to the public last Friday. Boy Genius Report is noting that its server logs point towards users visiting the site using a version of the iPhone OS numbered 2.0.1. Two builds are said to be in circulation, 5B101 for 2G iPhone and 5B103 iPhone 3G.

The server requests are said to come from the San Francisco Bay Area, near the Cupertino headquarters for Apple and Atlanta, AT&T’s home.

As the software appears to be internal, very little is known about what the minor update fixes. But AppleInsider appears to have got its hands on a screenshot (see picture).

Apple Not to Adjust UK iTunes Pricing

Tuesday 15th July, 2008 - 23:03 CET

Six months ago Apple announced that it would standardise the price of iTunes purchases in he UK to be in line with other European stores.

According to a report today, Apple has decided not to adjust the pricing on the UK iTunes store.

“The announcement was that we would match the UK price to that of other lower priced European countries”, an Apple spokesman said. “This is no longer necessary as exchange rates have effectively done it for us”.

At the time of the decision the exchange rate would have meant that a song costing 0.99 euros would be 74p, but as the Euro has risen against the pound in the last few months a 0.99 euro purchase now equals 0.79 pounds.

Apple Sues Clone Mac Maker

AppleInsider is reporting that Apple is suing Psystar, makers of computers which have hacked versions of Mac OS X installed.

Apple filed a formal complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on July 3rd. Although exact details are not known, AppleInsider believes that Apple has filed the complaint on grounds of copyright infringement.

In April, Psystar began selling a computer priced at $400 named “Open Computer” which was described as “a low-cost high-performance computing platform” which ran a hacked version of Mac OS X.

The company continued to provoke Apple by last month releasing a server version of its computer running a hacked version of Mac OS X server.

Apple has today quietly released firmware version 1.1.5 for iPod touch users who have opted not to pay for firmware version 2.0.

Although Apple has offered little information as to what is included with the firmware update, reports suggest that no new features are added, which means that 1.1.5 is likely just a bug fix and stability update.

Concerns Over Lack of Mac to MobileMe Push, iDisk Service Delayed

Monday 14th July, 2008 - 22:35 CET

Posted in: Apple News, MobileMe / .Mac

Written by: Alex Brooks

Following the official launch of MobileMe late last week a knowledge base article on Apple’s support site began raising concerns amongst some.

The article outlines that instant data sync only occurs to MobileMe from the web interface or a portable device such as iPhone or iPod touch. The main concern is that changes made on a Mac will not be instantly synced back to MobileMe but changes will be updated automatically every 15 minutes or manually by hitting the “Sync” button.

Also regarding MobileMe, Apple has confirmed that the iDisk File Sharing feature of the service will be delayed.

In response to a customers support email “Mike” of Apple’s MobileMe Support team wrote, “When MobileMe was announced, iDisk File Sharing was mentioned as a feature; however, the MobileMe webpage noted that all features listed on that page were subject to change,” continuing, “When MobileMe was released on July 10, 2008, iDisk File Sharing was not included. I apologize for any inconvenience.”

Apple’s website lists iDisk as coming soon but doesn’t offer any timeline as to when the feature will be enabled.

To help some users, Apple has pointed many users towards this support article, which describes other ways in which MobileMe users can share the contents of their remote iDisks.

iPhone 3Gs Display Intentionally Warmer

Monday 14th July, 2008 - 22:07 CET

Posted in: Apple News, iPhone

Written by: Alex Brooks

Over the weekend multiple reports surfaced that the display on the iPhone 3G had a noticeable yellow hue. Now it has been revealed that the increase in warmness is an intentional move by Apple.

Jason Snell over at Macworld spoke to Bob Borchers, Apple’s senior director of iPhone product marketing.

“Borchers indicated that this definitely isn’t a bug or a display defect. Yes, the display on the iPhone 3G has a warmer look—and that’s by design. The previous iPhone’s white was more of a cool blue (Borchers likened it to harsh fluorescent lighting), while this one’s is warmer and more of a sunny yellow,” reports Macworld.

Borchers continued, “We moved the white point in order to make [the display feel] more natural”

According to research by Richard Baguley the new iPhone’s color temperature is between 6800 and 7300 Kelvins, compared with a color temperature of about 8300K on the original iPhone.

Following the discovery of the yellow displays many began reporting that an updated version of the 2.0 firmware could fix the non-issue.

Today, John Gruber writes on his popular blog that updating the firmware is effectively pointless and it certainly doesn’t make any changes to the iPhones display white point.
