Read the first two parts of this series:

Part 1 - 1976 - 1986

Part 2 - 1986 - 1996

Apple’s board had ousted Gilbert Amelio from his position as Chairman and CEO and was searching for a replacement, the board immediately turned to Steve Jobs, he denied the position but did offer to help Apple for up to 90 days while they searched for a CEO. The board contemplated this and returned to Jobs, they asked his if he would be Chairman, he denied that position also. But Steve did agree to simply become a member of the board, but nothing more.

Although just a member of the board Steve took a de-facto leadership of Apple, on August 6 1997 at MacWorld Expo Boston Steve announced to the audience some shocking news, Apple’s board was going through a major reshuffle with the majority of the current board resigning and a new one moving in.

Read the other parts of this series:

Part 1 - 1976 - 1986

Part 3 - 1996 - 2006

Apple Computer was now 10 years old and was dominating the personal computer industry but things were not looking good, Steve Jobs was out of the picture running a separate company away from Apple and Sculley was at the head of Apple leading the company into rough waters, in a matter of a couple of years, Jobs was ousted, Wozniak resigned, the Lisa was discontinued and Microsoft released Windows 1.01. If things couldn’t be worse Apple was battling out a lawsuit with NeXT Computer although this was quickly dropped in 1986.

With the Apple III discontinued just a few years after its conception it was lucky that the Apple II was still selling well, but Apple’s focus was split, the Mac team was regularly improving the Macintosh with the Mac Plus and then the Mac 512k.

Read the next two parts of this series:

Part 2 - 1986 - 1996

Part 3 - 1996 - 2006

Well as you all know 2006 marks the 30th year since Apple Computer was founded and in a mere 3 days it will be the exact date since Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne started Apple.

Jobs and WozniakSteve Jobs (left) and Steve Wozniak (right) in 1976

You may be asking yourself who Ronald Wayne is, well he is often described as the silent partner of Apple, Ron worked with Steve Wozniak at Atari and was offered a place on the “side” business that Woz was starting, Ron wrote manuals and even designed the first Apple logo. He was given 10% control of Apple but after only a few months sold his stock for a measly $800, it is estimated that today his 10% could be worth up to $6 billion although he claims it was “the best decision available at that time”.

Today it was the turn of Apple Computer to fights its side of the battle, rejecting claims by Apple Corps Ltd. that selling music via the iTunes Music Store was a violation of an agreement made in 1991.

Apple Computer lawyer Anthony Grabiner said that “distribution of digital entertainment content” was permitted under the agreement made in 1991. he went on to say “even a moron in a hurry” could distinguish between a computer company selling music and a record label.

“Data transmission is within our field of use. That’s what (the agreement) says and it is inescapable” said Grabiner.

Apple Corp Case Begins

Wednesday 29th March, 2006 - 18:33 GMT

Posted in: Apple Legal News, Apple News

Written by: Alex Brooks

Today was the opening day of the court battle between Apple Corps and Apple Computer.

Apple Corps made opening arguments in its request for an injunction that would bar the computer manufacturer from using its logo - an apple with a bite taken out - to advertise the sale of music through iTunes.

Apple Corps attorney Geoffrey Vos played an iTunes advertisement in front of the court depicting exclusive tracks from Coldplay, the ad ends with the Apple Computer logo.

“That advertisement is as flagrant violation of this agreement as it is possible to imagine,” Vos said.

Alan Hely of Apple Computers corporate communications director had the following to say about the case:

“Over a decade ago, Apple signed an agreement with Apple Corps, a business controlled by the Beatles and their heirs, which specified the rights each company would have to use the “Apple” trademark. Unfortunately, Apple and Apple Corps now have differing interpretations of this agreement and will need to ask a court to resolve this dispute.”
