Apple Releases Safari 4.0.5

Apple today released Safari 4.0.5 for Mac and Windows, the minor update to Safari brings performance improvements and bug fixes.

Apple describes the update as delivering:

  • Performance improvements for Top Sites
  • Stability improvements for 3rd-party plug-ins
  • Stability improvements for websites with online forms and Scalable Vector Graphics
  • Fixes an issue that prevented Safari from changing settings on some Linksys routers
  • Fixes an issue that prevented some iWork.com users from commenting on documents

Safari 4.0.5 is available via software update or Apple’s website.

Apple Snaps Up Ex-Microsoft Security Chief

Apple has hired a former Microsoft security chief who served a lead on Windows XP Service Pack 2, at Apple the security expert will serve as senior security product manager.

According to PC World Window Synder began work at Apple this week, Synder has in the past also worked at Mozilla and was said to be credited with “professionalizing the Firefox security response team, at a time when the open-source browser was increasingly coming under attack from hackers.”

It is unknown what products Snyder will be working on but Apple is the third browser-maker to hirer her in the last five years.

This update is recommended for all Safari users and includes improvements to performance, stability, and security including:

  • Improved JavaScript performance
  • Improved Full History Search performance for users with a large number of history items
  • Stability improvements for 3rd-party plug-ins, the search field and Yahoo! Mail

Safari 4.0.3 – Leopard 40MB / Tiger 27MB

This update is recommended for all Safari users and includes improvements to stability, compatibility and security including:

  • Stability improvements for webpages that use the HTML 5 video tag
  • Stability improvements for 3rd-party plug-ins
  • Stability improvements for Top Sites
  • Fixes an issue that prevented some users from logging into iWork.com
  • Fixes an issue that could cause web content to be displayed in greyscale instead of color

Safari 4.0.1 – 43.8MB

This update addresses incompatibilities between Safari 4.0 and certain features in iPhoto ‘09, including Places and Facebook publishing.

Bluetooth Firmware Update 2.01.8MB

This update provides bug fixes and better compatibility with the Apple Wireless Mighty Mouse and Apple Wireless Keyboard.

It installs on all Macintosh systems with Bluetooth based on the Broadcom chipset.

Safari 4 Browser Downloaded Over 11 Million Times in Three Days

Apple has announced via press release that the Safari 4 browser which was released officially at the WWDC 2009 keynote has been downloaded more than 11 million times in just three days. Of those 11 million downloads six million can be attributed to Windows based downloads.

“Safari 4 is an incredible success on Mac and Windows with more than 11 million downloads in the first three days,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Safari users love the incredible speed and innovative features like Top Sites, Full History Search and Cover Flow.”

Today’s announcements included the introduction of the iPhone 3GS available on June 19, a new iPhone price-point and a preview of iPhone OS 3.0 which will be released on June 17. Mac OS X Snow Leopard was also demoed and will be available for $29 in September. Safari 4 is now also available to the public.

Apple also refreshed the entire lineup of notebooks moving the 13-inch model into the MacBook Pro range and adding SD card slots to some models.

Apple Unleashes Public Safari 4

Apple today during the WWDC 2009 keynote announced that Safari 4 is now available as a pubic release after a short period in beta testing.

Safari 4 features the Nitro engine which runs JavaScript up to 4.5 times faster than Safari 3. Safari 4 makes browsing more intuitive and enjoyable with innovative features, such as Top Sites, Full History Search and Cover Flow, and support for modern web standards like HTML 5 and advanced CSS Effects.

“The successful beta release helped us fine tune Safari 4 into an even better, faster version that customers are going to love,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Safari is enjoyed by 70 million users worldwide and with its blazing fast speed, innovative features and support for modern web standards, it’s the best browser on any platform.”

Safari 4 is built on the world’s most advanced browser technologies including the new Nitro JavaScript engine that executes JavaScript nearly eight times faster than IE 8 and more than four times faster than Firefox 3. Safari quickly loads HTML web pages more than three times faster than IE 8 and three times faster than Firefox 3.

Apple has also released an update to Safari 3 which is available for Leopard, Tiger and Windows XP or Vista.

Apple also released an update to Safari 4 which is available only to users of Mac OS X 10.5.7 via Software Update (build 5528.16 to 5528.17).

Apple Announces Public Beta of Safari 4

Apple has today announced that Safari 4 will be available as a public beta immediately for both Mac and Windows.

Innovative new features that make browsing more intuitive and enjoyable include Top Sites, for a stunning visual preview of frequently visited pages; Full History Search, to search through titles, web addresses and the complete text of recently viewed pages; Cover Flow, to easily flip through web history or bookmarks; and Tabs on Top, to make tabbed browsing easier and more intuitive.

Innovative new features in Safari 4 include:
