Apple Releases Mac OS X 10.5.6

Apple has released the sixth update to Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard this afternoon.

The 10.5.6 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac.

In a support document Apple details the changes in Mac OS X 10.5.6, here are some notable changes:

  • Improves reliability of Address Book syncing with iPhone and other devices and applications.
  • Improves the reliability of AirPort connections
  • Includes fixes for possible graphics distortion issues with certain ATI graphics cards.
  • [Mail] Includes overall performance and reliability fixes.
  • Contacts, calendars, and bookmarks on a Mac automatically sync within a minute of the change being made on the computer, another device, or the web at me.com.
  • Improves printing for the Adobe CS3 application suite.
  • Adds a Trackpad System Preference pane for portable Macs.
  • Improves the performance and reliability of Chess.

Latest Mac OS X 10.5 Update Today?

Apple has been testing Mac OS X 10.5.6 since late October and it now seems that the development is wrapping up and the sixth update to Mac OS X Leopard is ready to ship to customers.

In the last week Apple has released a flurry of builds to developers, usually a good sign of nearing the end of the testing and development cycle.

Mac Rumors is also reporting that its sources believe the update could be available as early as today (Friday 12).

Mac OS X 10.5.6 is said to encompass over 150 bug fixes in the latest builds.

Latest Mac OS X 10.5.6 (9G38) Seed Notes

Less than five days after the previous release of Mac OS X 10.5.6 Apple has given developers another build, this time the notes indicate that no known issues are present.

Although the build has no known issues this is not necessarily an indication of development wrapping up, but the speed of releases is indicative of nearing public release.

MobileMe Focus of Improvements in Latest 10.5.6 Release [Seed Notes]

Several weeks since the initial build of Mac OS X 10.5.6 Apple has released another build (9G35) to developers today. The sixth update to Mac OS X Leopard is said to be the largest yet with the current build containing over 80 fixes.

The latest builds of which the seed notes can be seen below show that Apple is improving compatibility and reliability between Mac OS X and MobileMe.

Mac OS X 10.5.6 (9G21) Seed Notes

Late last week Apple seeded the first build of Mac OS X 10.5.6. The update will be the sixth update to Leopard since its retail release in October of 2007.

The update which is expected to be one of the largest updates to Mac OS X Leopard includes over 50 fixes in its first iteration. The build which is labelled 9G21 is said to weigh in at 350MB in its delta form.

Security Update 2008-007 Released

Apple has today released the seventh security update of calendar 2008 which fixes numerous security issues including one introduced by the Mac OS X 10.5.5 update.

The security update which is available for both Mac OS X Leopard and Tiger fixes holes in ColorSync, Finder, general Mac OS X networking, PSNormalizer, QuickLook, root certificates, Script Editor and much more.

Apple Releases Mac OS X 10.5.5

Apple has today released the latest update to Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. The latest update includes many bug fixes, security enhancements and is available through software update.

Details of the Mac OS X 10.5.5 update are available on the Apple website and security changes here.

Some of the highlights in the update include:

  • Addresses stability issues with video playback, processor core idling, and remote disc sharing for MacBook Air.
  • Improves iPhone sync reliability with iCal and Address Book.
  • Includes extensive graphics enhancements.
  • Improves Mail robustness when sending messages.
  • Improves Back to My Mac reliability.
  • Improves Time Machine reliability with Time Capsule.
  • Time Machine can now back up iPhone backups that are on your Mac, as well as other items in (~/Library/Application Support).

Security Update 2008-005 Released

Apple has today released Security Update 2008-005 for users of Mac OS X Server 10.4, Mac OS X 10.4.11, Mac OS X Server 10.5, and Mac OS X 10.5.4.

The update includes many security improvements but of particular attention is that Apple has fixed a serious DNS/BIND server vulnerability where an attacker could cause a Mac OS X DNS server to direct clients to forged websites.

Mac OS X 10.5.5 on Horizon

AppleInsider reports that Apple is preparing to send the next major update to Mac OS X 10.5 to developers. The rumour site reports that developers could see the first build of Mac OS X 10.5.5 before the weekend.

No word at the moment on what exactly the update will include.

Apple began seeding Mac OS X 10.5.4 to developers only a month ago, it was rumoured that the update would come quickly as it packs updates required for MobileMe.
