During the testing of Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server the much hyped file system ZFS did make a brief appearance, as it did with Mac OS X Leopard client and server. Neither of these operating systems actually shipped with ZFS read or writing capabilities this is partly due to a licensing issue says data storage expert Robin Harris.
Sun prefers the CDDL and may have asked for some extra protections, including Apple’s promise not seek damages should Sun lose the ZFS patent infringement suits initiated by NetApp, that caused Apple to reconsider the business risk of ZFS.
Harris goes onto explain that Sun could release ZFS under a GNU General Public License (GPL) but that would allow its conclusion in other environments, Harris continues saying that Oracle’s imminent acquisition of Sun could bring the ZFS licensing issues to light again.

Security Update 2009-004 is recommended for all users and improves the security of Mac OS X. Previous security updates have been incorporated into this security update.
Apple has today released Mac OS X 10.5.8 for client and server installs of Leopard.
The 10.5.8 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac, as well as specific fixes for:
- compatibility and reliability issues when joining AirPort networks.
- an issue that could cause some monitor resolutions to no longer appear in Displays System Preferences.

Apple began testing Mac OS X 10.5.8 just over one month ago and has this week delivered another build to registered developers.
Build 9L25 includes just two areas of change; a fix to the “Save As” option in Mail app and URL localisation but an ever expanding list of focus areas suggests Apple may be looking to make 10.5.8 the final update for Leopard. In particular Apple has begun asking developers to focus on underlying technologies within Mac OS X.

While Apple began testing of Mac OS X 10.5.8 just prior to WWDC the latest builds have begun showing signs of another mammoth update.
Build 9L16 was given to developers earlier today and asks those with the build to focus on AirPort, ColorSync, AppKit, AddressBook, Safari and USB amongst others.

Apple has today released the long awaited Mac OS X 10.5.7 update. The update which had been in testing since late February contained several hundred bug fixes and enhancements in its last seed over the weeekend.

A report from Mac|Life today claims that Mac OS X 10.5.7 which first entered developer testing in late February will finally reach the awaiting public this Friday.
Elsewhere Apple has released yet another build of Mac OS X 10.5.7 to its developer community, build 9J60 offers just one listed fix and Safari 4 remains in the list of known issues. It should be noted that many developers have confirmed to World of Apple that Safari 4 works fine in Mac OS X 10.5.7 but there appears to be an issue with the installer.

Apple has today delivered a new build of Mac OS X 10.5.7 to developers. The new build labelled Mac OS X 10.5.7 9J58 offers only two areas of change, both affecting CFNetwork in association with Safari, VPN and iChat.
As with all previous builds of 10.5.7 Apple warns that the Safari 4 Beta browser will not install on the build.
AppleInsider notes that Apple is “easing the release” to make sure “all its ends are tied.”
[Update] Despite AppleInsider reporting that Apple is slowing the release of Mac OS X 10.5.7 World of Apple readers have reminded us that Mac Pro users this week began receiving their ATI Radeon HD 4870 graphics upgrade kits which require drivers only present in Mac OS X 10.5.7.

Despite many expecting that the previous build of Mac OS X 10.5.7 would be the one to see a public release Apple today has released a new build labelled 9J56.
The latest build adds another five fixes to the huge list including issues with AFP volumes, Bluetooth stability and crash reporting and logging.
