Today was a big day in the world of Apple. Updates to the iPod, iPod Nano & iPod Shuffle as well as a new version of iTunes, introduction of iTV and the anticipated iTunes Movie Store, many Apple News sites were busy keeping up. Here is an overall look at the day’s events.

All news highlighted in this article was crafted by the World Of Apple Staff and applicable outside sources. This is simply a “one stop” for all news on todays events.

New Line of iPod Nanos

Along with the introduction of multiple colours, Apple also bumped the memory sizes up to 2Gb, 4Gb and 8Gb. All models now feature 24-hour battery life, and a screen that is 40% brighter. The new iPod nano models are as follows:

2Gb (500 Songs): $149/£99
Available in Silver (Aluminium) only

4Gb (1,000 Songs): $199/£129
Available in Silver (Aluminium), Green, Blue and Pink

8Gb (2,000 Songs): $249/£169
Available in Black only

All models are ready to ship within 24 Hours on the UK & US Apple online stores.

New iPod Shuffle Released

Amongst other news, Apple today updated their popular iPod Shuffle music player.

The new iPod Shuffle (above), is available in one universal size (1 Gigabyte) and can hold up to 240 songs. Its enclosure is made entirely of aluminium, and battery life remains at approx. 12 hours.

The iPod Shuffle retails at $79/£55 and includes a new-style iPod Shuffle USB dock.

iPod 5G Firmware Update

Apple today released a firmware update for it’s 5G iPod. The update adds support for games downloaded from the iTunes Store, as well as the widely requested gapless playback. Whilst scrolling through song listings letters will display showing you where you are in the list, and finally the ability to adjust the screen brightness.

The update will be downloaded by the integrated iPod Updater in iTunes 7.

Apple Introduces iTunes 7…New Look, Added Movies, Games & A New Name

Today’s media event Apple announced an update to its popular music jukebox software. Of note the iTunes Music Store has been renamed to iTunes Store to coincide with the addition of sales of movies.
The following changes are present across iTunes 7 and the iTunes Store:

Cover Flow - allows navigation through album art
iPod Games - Games available to purchase for $4.99
Movies - Movies available to purchase at a resolution of 640 x 480px, as expected only movies from Disney (Pixar, Miramax, Touchstone) are available.

Name Change
The first change is regarding the name - the iTunes Music Store is now just referred to as the ‘iTunes Store.’ Clearly with added extra content, the name ‘iTunes Music Store’ was no longer fitting. This name change first became apparent this afternoon.

Hollywood Movies. Now in iTunes
As was much anticipated, Apple also updated iTunes today with the addition selling Hollywood movies in the store. The videos will be available at a ‘near-DVD’ resolution of 640×480 and will share the same usage rights as iTunes TV Shows. The pricing for movies on iTunes is as follows:

Older Movies: $9.99 New Movies: $14.99 (although if you pre-order, or order during the first week of release you can get them for just $12.99)

Movies carry Apple’s FairPlay DRM, and it’s currently unkown whether these movies are burnable to DVD, however it seems highly unlikely. Apple mentioned they would like to make movie downloads internationally available in 2007, however there are no guarantees this will happen.

Apple commented there are 75 movies available for purchase & download at launch, all from Disney-owned studios. More movies will be added ‘every week’.

iPod Games
Apple also unexpectedly added an ‘iPod Games’ department to the iTunes Store today. The store currently stocks a selection of 9 games available for purchase and downloads, which can be played on any 5G iPod. The games retail for $4.99/£3.99. The initial selection of games is as follows:

Bejeweled
Cubis 2
Mahjong
Mini Golf
Pac-Man
Tetris
Texas Hold’em
Vortex
Zuma
Cosmetic Changes
Alongside these major updates, Apple also included some cosmetic changes to the iTunes Store, designed to match the new iTunes graphical style.

Codename: iTV. Coming Soon.

Apple has made a move which has shocked many by announcing a product ahead of official release. The product has no official name nor release date but some details were available.
The product which is codenamed iTV is a media centre with a similar appearance to a flattened Mac mini and provides various audio and video outputs. The intention being to content iTV to your TV and wirelessly stream video and audio from PC and Macs using a front row like interface.

Features of iTV:

Price - $299
No power brick (built-in power supply)
USB, Ethernet, 802.11 (wireless)
HDMI, optical audio, component, RCA
Compatible with Apple remote

There you have it. As you can see it has been a busy day for Apple. A feed has been posted of the event and can be located here. (Quicktime 7 Required)
