AT&T is repeating last years pattern of hiring retail temps to help in retail stores during the month of June.

A request has been made of Kelly Services temp agency that will see workers join AT&T as greeters for a project known only as “Summer Project Pro.”

In June of 2007 AT&T hired many short-term workers for what turned into crowd control for the release of the iPhone on June 29th.

Temporary workers will begin work on June 16th and end three months later on August 16th, those who remember from last year will note that the temps started one week before the iPhone release to receive the necessary training.

3G iPhone on-Route to US?

Saturday 24th May, 2008 - 01:00 GMT

ImportGenius.com is reporting that the much-rumoured and highly anticipated 3G iPhone could be shipping into the US at this very moment.

The site reports that 188 ocean containers have been shipped to Apple Inc of a product that has never been declared on any previous shipping manifests.

On March 19 Quanta delivered 20 ocean containers of merchandise, described on the Bills of Lading as “electric computers,” to Apple, Inc. Neither Apple, Quanta, nor any other company has ever used this product description for any shipments to the U.S. […] Over the last few months shipments of “desktop computers” and other devices did not fall off, indicating that these “electric computers” represent a new product for the company rather than a simple renaming for their Customs declarations.

Of interest the article notes that one of the shipments of “electric computers” weighed 7140kg for 504 units, making each unit around 14kg in weight. It is unclear whether this particular container actually did contain Macs.

Gizmodo is reporting that “sources close to the 3G iPhone launch” have confirmed that the next-generation iPhone will see an introduction at WWDC 2008 on June 9th.

The report comes as no surprise following a mass of reports all pointing towards a June release, the report does however point towards worldwide availability post WWDC and June 18th as a specific launch date for Spain.

Gizmodo also states that another source familiar with the launch has confirmed that the iPhone will no longer be available at a fixed price point in some countries. It is expected that the iPhone will be subject to carrier subsidies and incentives in many European countries.

The option to select “iPhone Black” is visible alongside the normal “iPhone” for existing AT&T customers who are logged into their AT&T account.

In Brief: Latest iPhone OS 2.0 Beta Confirms 3G, 2.6GHz MacBook a Typo?

Monday 12th May, 2008 - 13:00 GMT

Latest iPhone OS 2.0 Beta Confirms 3G

One developer who has received the latest iPhone OS 2.0 beta has activated a hidden setting that enables or disables 3G.

Currently no 3G iPhone exists so when activated the current EDGE iPhone crashes but the setting confirms the existence of the long-rumoured 3G iPhone.

2.6GHz MacBook a Typo?

Over the weekend Apple’s Hot News page was cycling an image advertising a 2.6GHz MacBook.

The advert read: “The new MacBook. Up to 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.”

The MacBook was last refreshed in late February so the chances of an update are slim. Also the MacBook Pro does offer a 2.6GHz model so this is most likely a typo.

At&T Blocking Out June 15 to July 12 for iPhone Launch?

Tuesday 6th May, 2008 - 23:00 GMT

Posted in: AT&T / Cingular, Apple Rumour, iPhone Rumour

Written by: Alex Brooks

Last year it was reported that AT&T has blocked holiday allowance to employees between June 15 and July 15. Of course the iPhone subsequently saw its release on June 29.

Boy Genius Report is today noting that another AT&T memo informs employees that vacation will be limited between June 15 and July 12.

The internal memo as follows:

To: All Employees

Last year at this time we asked that all vacations be scheduled before June 15 or after July 15, to ensure adequate store staffing and to give everyone an equal opportunity to benefit from an exciting product launch. Thanks to your hard work, we experienced excellent sales during the mid-summer period. This year, the numbers you produced in 2007 will be hard to beat; but as a business, we must rise to the challenge, and make every effort to exceed last year’s sales results. Your management team is counting on you!

We’ll meet the challenge “head-on” by providing an exciting Summer Promotional Launch to enable your sales to soar. We again anticipate heavier than normal customer traffic in our stores, providing an excellent earning opportunity for every front line retail sales consultant (RSC) in company owned retail stores.

To ensure proper staffing during this period, Sales personnel planning to take approved time off are encouraged to schedule their vacations before June 15 or after July 12 to participate in the heavy selling period

Previously approved vacation will be allowed where voluntary rescheduling is not feasible

No additional vacation will be approved for 6/15 – 7/12

If customer traffic is manageable, there may be an opportunity to approve vacation toward the end of the period. Managers will communicate updates as they become available.
