Kevin Rose described the new visualiser in iTunes 8 as “trippy” and Magnetosphere certainly fits the bill.

The diagrams suggest that the iPod nano will return to the longer design of the second-generation model. The diagrams also suggest somewhat of a curved design.

The iPod touch appears to be receiving a similar look to the iPhone 3G, gaining a more tapered design. The diagrams show a slightly thicker iPod touch compared to the current model and external volume controls also appear present.

Last week Kevin Rose pinpointed September 9 as the date on which Apple would unveil new iPods as well a “big update” to iTunes. Apple has now officially confirmed next weeks Special Event and with that news Kevin Rose has spoke further on iTunes 8.

In a short blog post on his own website Rose wrote:

iTunes 8 includes Genius, which makes playlists from songs in your library that go great together. Genius also includes Genius sidebar, which recommends music from the iTunes Store that you don’t already have.

With iTunes 8, browse your artists and albums visually with the new Grid view; download your favorite TV shows in HD quality from the iTunes Store; sync your media with iPod nano (4th generation), iPod classic (2nd generation), and iPod touch (2nd generation); and enjoy a stunning new music visualizer.

Rose clearly states that the information comes from a new source but is consistent with details he has heard before.

In addition to these details Kevin Rose sent out a post on Twitter talking of “trippy” visualisations in iTunes 8 describing it as:

the new iTunes 8.0 visualizations are really trippy - there is one with planet like objects wrapping around each other w/stars/light streams

We hesitated to post this Engadget article about Kevin Rose’s predictions of new iPods and other iStuff mostly because it seemed too… detailed. That, and as Engadget points out themselves, Kevin hasn’t been a –to put it kindly– very reliable source.

Recycleosphere has a fairly well thought out summary of the rumor mill’s latest predictions, including a thorough picking through Mr. Rose’s comments. They take into consideration some key points about iPod touch price decreases, Microsoft’s position in the PMP game, and an iTunes subscription service that, while considered as any rumor, are well worth reading.

I personally am worried about the suggestion that an “iTunes Unlimited” subscription service could be on the horizon, considering the amount of bungling Apple’s been doing with MobileMe and the AppStore and previously with .Mac. It seems to me that Apple needs a helping hand in designing and maintaining their interactive web stores and web infrastructure.

“We are actually reviewing iPhones from a HSBC Group perspective … and when I say that, I mean globally,” HSBC’s Australia and New Zealand chief information officer Brenton Hush told ZDNet Australia.

“You know, it’s a big decision, especially when you have an existing fleet out there,” he said. “But it’s definitely something we are considering from a HSBC Group perspective.”

“I think [the iPhone] would change some underlying infrastructure considerations from an enterprise perspective,” he said .”But [Apple] have been pretty smart with the design.”

This week Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has sent a note to clients speculating on past years. The reports states that for the last three years Apple has held a Special Event in September and the analyst is predicting the same.

Munster in particular expects iPods to be the focus of the event with the iPod shuffle and iPod nano taking a backseat receiving only capacity increases. On the other hand Munster does expect a price cut for the iPod touch down to $199 with a design change similar to that of the iPhone 3G.

In addition to an iPod announcement Munster also expects a complete overhaul of Apple’s notebook line barring the MacBook Air.

“We note that the MacBook has had the same design since its launch over two years ago, and the MacBook Pro has had essentially the same design since its launch over 2.5 years ago, which was very similar in design to the PowerBook G4 released over 5.5 years ago,” he told clients. “To compare, the long-running iMac G5 design lasted three years.”

Munster expects new looks for both the MacBook and MacBook Pro with the MacBook re-entering the $999 price point bracket.

The Jaffray analyst retains a Buy rating on AAPL with a price target of $250.

iLounge is today reporting that the next-generation iPod nano will feature a taller design. According to the iPod news and rumour site the screen will match the aspect ration of the iPhone and iPod touch which is 1.5:1 up from the current 1.33:1 found on the current nano.

Microsoft Zune (left), artist rendition of 4G iPod nano (right)

To fit the screen and Click Wheel neatly together, the new nano will adopt a form factor that shifts away from the almost square dimensions of the 2007 third-generation nano back towards the general shape of the first- and second-generation models. As one of our sources noted, it’s a surprise that the new nano will be bigger than the prior model, but the goal appears to be preservation of all of the prior model’s usability while adding a bigger screen, and there aren’t many other ways to accomplish that goal.

The article also notes that a recent rumour by 9to5Mac that the iPod nanos will be multi-coloured is “most likely inaccurate”.

Gearlive reports that Apple has seed the latest version of the iPhone OS to iPhone developers who registered before July 11th 2008.

Version 2.1 (beta 1, build 5F90) of the iPhone OS is said to include new Core Location features suggesting that turn-by-turn GPS could be on the horizon. Core Location is said to be able to track your direction and speed.

Also included within the new OS is some early push notification APIs that allow applications to receive notifications in the background.

In addition to GearLive’s report MacNN is noting that some developers have found hints relating to copy and paste functionality.

One notes that in exploring the Localizable.strings entry under English.lproj in the current iPhone WebKit framework, there are entries for several commands the firmware does not currently support, including cutting, copying and pasting.

Apple’s own Greg Joswiak has recently stated that copy/paste functionality has not been high enough on the priority list so far, but suggested that there it could be coming in the future.

Apple also seeded a new version of the iPhone SDK to developers but the new SDK can not be used to submit Apps to the current App Store.

Think MacBook screen, possibly a bit smaller, in glass with iPhone-like, but fuller-featured Multi-Touch. Gesture library. Full Mac OS X. This is why they bought P.A. Semi. Possibly with Immersion’s haptic tech. Slot-loading SuperDrive. Accelerometer. GPS. Pretty expensive to produce initially, but sold at “low” price that will reduce margins. Apple wants to move these babies. And move they will. This is some sick ****. App Store-compatible, able to run Mac apps, too. By October at the latest.

MDN notes that this is a rumour, and none of the information has been independently confirmed at this time.

AppleInsider is today reporting on a note sent by investment firm Piper Jaffray to clients based on Apple’s outlook for the rest of 2008 and 2009.

During yesterdays financial conference call Apple stated that it expects gross margins to be down from 34.8% to 31.5% in the current quarter (Q408) with a further decline to 30% for fiscal 2009.

While Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray acknowledges that Apple is always conservative in its outlook, he also expects Apple to cut prices of existing products to maintain sales.

“We believe there is an 80% chance Apple will introduce redesigned MacBooks and possibly new MacBook Pros at lower price points,” the analyst wrote. “Specifically, Apple may re-enter the $999 price point (currently $1099) with the MacBook, or test the $1,799 price point with the MacBook Pro (currently $1999).”

Munster also spoke about iPods, he expects a “slightly redesigned iPods” that will include “lower-cost touch-based iPods” just in time for the holiday shopping season.

Piper Jaffray maintains a buy rating on Apple with a price target of $250.

The comment came after concerns that Apple predicted gross margins of just 30% down from 34.8% in the June quarter. According to Apple a future product transition will cause a drop in gross margins.

The chief was short on details but did explain that price will be a significant driving factor. He continued that Apple often introduces products with new technology at a high price, but seeks to drive the price lower over time.

When referring to the unnamed product the CFO described the product as having “technologies and features that others can’t match”.

It has emerged that Apple appears to be testing a newer version of the iPhone 2.0 software which was officially released to the public last Friday. Boy Genius Report is noting that its server logs point towards users visiting the site using a version of the iPhone OS numbered 2.0.1. Two builds are said to be in circulation, 5B101 for 2G iPhone and 5B103 iPhone 3G.

The server requests are said to come from the San Francisco Bay Area, near the Cupertino headquarters for Apple and Atlanta, AT&T’s home.

As the software appears to be internal, very little is known about what the minor update fixes. But AppleInsider appears to have got its hands on a screenshot (see picture).

AppleInsider has revealed what is said to be the next major re-design of the MacBook Pro. The image of a case was originally published by a Chinese blog last Saturday but its reliability was questioned.

AppleInsider is now confirming that the photo “appears to be a dated prototype”.

The new casing for the MacBook Pro is said to be more tapered at the edges, similar to that of the MacBook Air. Also visible in the leaked image is a rectangular recess on the bottom casing. This is said to be the latch that will release the notebook’s long and narrow battery cover.

AppleInsider does not divulge when it expects the new look MacBook Pros to ship but does note that Apple could include some “additional surprises”.

Store Setup Requirements for iPhone

This document outlines the initial store setup requirements that you must fulfill in order to effectively sell the iPhone in store. To ensure customers can leave with a fully functional iPhone, it must be first be “unbricked”. This process involves using the tether (a USB cable: see below) to connect/sync the iPhone to a unique ‘Activation Only’ version of iTunes via a computer. More information about the unbricking process will be provided in training (found on Fast Track and Sales Central) and you will be informed when the job aid is available.

Glossary:

Bricked: Default state of the iPhone, only emergency calls allowed.
Unbrick: Enabling the phone for services.
Tethering: Connecting an iPhone to a computer running iTunes.
Activation: Customer account setup and CTN provisioning which is completed in-store and is immediate. This is identical to today’s process for other wireless products.

Requirement 1) Download/Install ‘Store only version’ of iTunes

In order to unbrick the iPhone in store (which is a requirement of the iPhone Sales Process), you must have iTunes version 7.6.3b4. Installed on your computer. This version has a special ‘Activation Only Mode’ that must be enabled and used in store.

The iTunes version that is currently available on the Apple website is version 7.6.2. This version does NOT have the activation only mode and as such please action the following steps to complete the installation of version 7.6.3b4:

1) Download and install 7.6.3b4 from the following link. Do not attempt to use any other version of iTunes as V7.6.3b4 is a specific activation only module designed for in-store use.
https://attache.apple.com/AttacheWeb…QNmUHPjRZRI%3D
2) When you enter the link above you will be asked if you want to ‘open’ or ’save’ the file. Select ‘Open’. The file is 102mb and may take 5 to 15 minutes to download, depending on your connection speed.
3) Once downloaded you will see a window containing two files. One file is for a Mac and the other is for Windows. Please double-click the Windows.exe file.
4) A small ‘warning’ window will pop-up that advises you to extract all files –Please do so.
5) An ‘Extraction Wizard’ will start. Click ‘Next’.
6) You will be asked where you want the files to be extracted to. The default location (a temporary file) is ok, so select ‘next’. You will then be advised that the extraction has finished. Click ‘Finish’.
7) A new window will appear with the extracted files in (both Mac and Windows). Double click on the Windows.exe file. You may be presented with a Windows security warning. If so, select ‘Run’ as the files are safe. There may be a delay before the next step starts.
8. Pop-up windows and instructions will guide you through the rest of the installation process. You must close MS Outlook (if it’s open) before completing the installation.
9) During the installation process you will be asked if you would like an iTunes shortcut on your desktop – Please do so.
10) You may be asked to restart your computer – Please do so if asked.
11) Once you have restarted you will see an iTunes shortcut on your desktop.
12) The download process is complete – you must now follow the following steps to complete the process.
* You MUST now enable the ‘Activation only Module’ within iTunes.
13) Create a shortcut on your desktop by right clicking on a blank space on your desktop and selecting ‘new’ and then ’shortcut’.
14) A ‘Create a shortcut’ wizard window will appear. In the box within the window marked ‘Type the location of the item’, please type or copy and paste the following bolded text in this EXACT format.
15) Please ensure you use the whole of this text with all punctuation/grammar exactly as specified:
“C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe” /StoreActivationMode 1
16) Click ‘Next’. You will be asked to enter a name for the shortcut. use:
iTunes Activation Module
17) Click ‘Finish’. You will now see a new iTunes shortcut on your desktop with this name.
18) This shortcut is the Activation Module and should be used to unbrick the iPhone. When you first start this version of iTunes there will be a terms and conditions agreement that you will need to “accept’ in order to proceed.
Note: Unbricking the iPhone should only be completed after activating the iPhone on Sales Central. Full instructions on how and when to activate and unbrick will be provided in a training job aid on fast track and sales central. You will be informed when this Job Aid is available.
Note: As of July 11 2008, an updated version of iTunes (7.7) will be publicly available from www.apple.ca. It will have the activation only mode built in (like 7.6.3b4) so you will not need to use unique Weblinks to download it. As it is a publicly available version of iTunes it still needs to be configured for store use. Therefore you MUST ‘enable’ version 7.7 in the same way as you did for version 7.6.3b4 that is detailed above.
1) To update your current version (7.6.3b4) to V7.7 to benefit from software updates; Open iTunes, select ‘help’ and ‘check for updates’ or go to www.apple.ca and download iTunes from the ‘downloads’ section. You do not have to uninstall previous versions first.
2) You MUST still enable the activation only mode, using the shortcut creation method above.
Requirement 2) Tethering the iPhone
Ÿ Every iPhone box contains its own tether (USB cables to connect the iPhone to the computer) which is required to complete the unbricking process and for customers to sync their iPhone’s at home.
Ÿ In order to speed up the in store process you will receive 2 tethers for your store as part of your Demo unit docking station shipment.
Ÿ Attach each tether via a USB port (ideally USB 2.0) to separate computers. There is no need to remove the tethers; they can remain connected at all times. If the tether is not long enough, you can extend it with a USB extension lead purchased from many electronics stores
Ÿ The iPhone will need to be connected at the other end of tether for unbricking - only after the activation has been completed in SC (see training module on SC and Fast Track for details).
Requirement 3) Sales Central Training and IDs
Ÿ iPhone should only be activated via Sales Central and through the call centre in an emergency.
Ÿ An iPhone Sales Process job aid will be available on Fast Track and SC. It details all the related sales process discussed in this document and others, including Sales Central.
Ÿ Please ensure all store reps have their own unique and active Sales Central ID and have reviewed the job aid.
Ÿ The iPhone product will be made available through DOAT in due course (you will be advised when this happens) and no other special permissions are required in order to activate the iPhone.

Additional Information:

Product training is now available on Fast Track – Please sign up as soon as possible!

Mosaic Representatives will be visiting select stores in the lead-up to Launch

Launch day plans will soon be available. In the interim please do not modify your store opening hours, speculate on launch plans, contact the media or create any form of waitlists or advertising related to the iPhone.
