The Video Electronics Standard Association has today officially issued its Mini DisplayPort standard based on technology licensed from Apple.

Last year after Apple first included Mini DisplayPort in a MacBook Pro refresh VESA confirmed later on that the connector would be included in the DisplayPort 1.1a specification. DisplayPort 1.2 is in the final stages of approval by VESA and would bring double the available bandwidth to 21.6GB/s, furthering DisplayPorts ability to support multiple monitors, at higher resolutions, refresh rates and colour depths.

Although Mini DisplayPort was created by Apple the company agreed to licence the connector to VESA for inclusion in the DisplayPort standard allowing adoption by third parties other than Apple. Apple also offers a no-fee license for any developers wishing to use the connector.
