Cult of Mac has posted an interview with Rich Miller, editor of the Data Center Knowledge website. The interview covers Apple’s brand new $1 billion data centre which was revealed in June as opening in Maiden, North Carolina around 2010.

Apple currently has a data centre in Newark, California which is said to be around 100,000 square feet, Apple’s new facility in North Carolina is said to dwarf this at a massive 500,000 square feet; making it one of the largest in the world.

In the interview Miller speculates that Apple could be planning to use the centre for cloud computing such as running remote apps. “The companies that are building the biggest data centers tend to also have the biggest cloud ambitions,” says Miller.

The interview offers no specifics on what Apple could do with cloud computing but does offer some additional information about why Apple may have chosen the North Carolina site.
