AppleInsider reports that discoveries made within the latest iPhone OS 3.0 builds suggest support for a new chip that could enable low power 802.11n support on both the new iPhone and iPod touch.

According to AppleInsider the current Broadcom chip that supplies WiFi and Bluetooth is BCM4325 but files within iPhone OS 3.0 point towards BCM4329 being the new chip.
The important part of the new chip is its ability to join 5GHz 802.11n networks, the current chip only contains support for 802.11a and 2.4GHz 802.11b/g networks. The current chip forces network administrators to setup a network capable of both 802.11b/g/a and 802.11n just to allow access from the iPhone.
