Ahead of Apple’s preview of iPhone OS 3.0 Kevin Rose has revealed some details that he believes will be present in the major iPhone software upgrade.
During the live Diggnation at SXSW in Austin, Texas last Rose gave details of how the iPhone OS 3.0 will integrate copy and paste. According to Rose to copy or cut a word you would press and hold a word and a magnifier bubble would appear, you can then drag “copy boundaries” around what you want to select and then hit either copy or cut.
In addition Rose said that MMS and video recording would not be present in this release nor the ability to run background applications.
Finally Rose made a mention the Palm Pre and how Apple will match all the features of the handset.
[Update] Video can be seen below (warning strong language).

As much as I am looking forward to copy and paste I really hope they announce MMS. The password codes that are sent when friends send MMS are quite frustrating.
Also, I hope for some better management of applications. The other day I had to restore my phone and the manual reorganization of applications on the different screens took a long time. I had expected that my order would stay the same but for some reason the restore messed it up.

Apple risks falling behind as everyone is going touch while the iPhone still can’t do much. You will only get away with being the prettiest for so long without smarts.
iMacs would not be as much of a hit without iLife, and the iPhone will be doomed without equally smart software.
More memory and storage with faster processors will be welcomed, but the killer app(s) are what drive hardware sales. If i can’t forward text messages, save attachments, send files from the phone, have the ability to cut and paste, then the iPhone is just another pretty face, but when the day is done, just another dumb date that you joke about to your friends.
Video with iChat would be cool and it would set the phone apart, but without the basic ability to function at the current levels of other smart phones, especially when those phones are now touch, the appeal of the iPhone diminishes greatly.
The iPhone is becoming more like a hollywood star whereby everyone thinks they are cool, but when you get to know them outside of scripts, they are rather dumb; while the other smart phones are becoming like the geek that when she took off her glasses and let down her hair, she was quite cute, and still very smart.

Kevin has been wrong in the past, remember the two batteried iPhone that was fling to come out for Verizon?
He has been right lately but his information will be wrong one of these days and it would surprise me if Apple added copy and paste before MMS.

Ha, can’t even watch that flash video on this iphone

The Apple iPhone is like a child prodigy that has been held back in 5th grade for 3 years, and it is way past ridiculous. I had a Palm Treo 700w THREE YEARS AGO that could do all the things that we are STILL WAITING FOR and BEGGING APPLE FOR… How in the world do you come out with a “smartphone” that can link up to Exchange servers (I use mine for work) that you can’t copy or paste? Can’t save attachments? I can’t get picture messages?
Don’t get me started on all the worthless crap that fills up the App Store, 1% of that is actually downloadable and worth a look, and 25% is worth keeping. Not Apple’s fault though I guess…
Look, the iPhone isn’t cool anymore, sorry… It’s time to fix that, and hopefully with all I am hearing about the new 3.0 we are going to be looking at a new phone all together. From what I am hearing, this is how the iPhone should have came out with last year, or originally… If I don’t get MMS soon, I am going to frisbee this damn phone out of my car window on 101.
Thanks for listening to my rant…
edu.Mac.nation 15th March 2009, 21.09 pm
@Nick
I think you make excellent points and your “rant” is well justified!
Nick K. 15th March 2009, 21.13 pm
I have one more…
PUT A DAMN NUMBER NOTIFICATION WITH THE SCHEDULE! GEEZ!
The schedule is the most important part of a “smartphone” and the lack of a number bubble (seriously, how easy would that be to do?) really angers me…
Again, my Windows Treo let me know what was happening that day on the homescreen… 3 years ago guys, three…
Nick K. 15th March 2009, 21.40 pm
Ok, last one…
Why is it so hard to turn WiFi on and off? Too many steps… Maybe it’s a stretch, but I think it should be easier, maybe set it up to flip on when you open Safari, or just make it easier to get to…
Just complaining because I just had to do it…
Ok, I’m done for awhile.
artie 15th March 2009, 21.47 pm
MMS MMS MMS… what the hell. Next you will be asking for your floppy drives back and the ADB port. Move with the times guys. All the other smart phones are getting email. So that means people can EMAIL their photos back and forth.
Move away from legacy. This is the reason why Microsoft Windows is so stuffed. It still relies on DOS.
Move on….

Wow! I’ve never seen such a big deal made of missing feature. That’s what happens when you sell a far superior product than your competition, but you leave out one simple function. Basically, the hordes of the envious quickly educate themselves as to what’s missing so that they can throw it in your face when the right moment comes along.
Nick K. 15th March 2009, 22.11 pm
Look, we need MMS, like Ird says, it’s a simple thing that every smartphone has, yet Apple just neglected…
It’s not to bring it up to par with Windows phones, its to keep the compatibility with non smart phone users… It’s a simple thing that phones have had since 2000 and we are still waiting for, its a gripe about the best device on the market that is not being taken advantage of at all.
Not everyone has or needs a smartphone, but everyone in the free world has a camera phone.

@Nickl:Look, the iPhone isn’t cool anymore, sorry…
LOL that’s what YOU WANT to believe isnt’t it ?
@Richard:
“Copy and paste with MMS is cool, but without the basic ability to function at the current levels of Iphone (uber class Multitouch interface), especially when this Iphone has always the best interface (by far), the appeal of these Phones diminishes greatly.”

Kevin Rose?! You mean the guy who was dead wrong about the iPhone in the past still has the guts to openly make predictions? What a turd.
“In addition Rose said that MMS and video recording would not be present in this release nor the ability to run background applications.”
A monkey could have figured that one out. The iPhone’s processor can’t handle several apps running at once. That’s why Backgrounder on jailbroken iPhones will sometimes shut down apps running in the background when you least expect it. There’s a lot that can’t be done with the iPhone right now because of hardware limitations.

@Rick K.
I completely agree. I loved my iPhone to start with and if it weren’t for my jailbreak for themes, bluetooth, video & the like I woulda chucked this pretty little brick outta my two story classroom window a month after I bought it. Heck I already bought a G1 with Android unlocked on AT&T because it actually offers NORMAL features plus probably the most advanced OS ever to be put on a phone so far. But the iPhone does have MultiTouch and a better interface, I’ll give it that. Final opinion, neither phone is perfect, if I could combine the two it would be amazing but for now my G1 is my main phone, at least until Apple kicks it up a notch.
/end rant lol
Steve Jobs 16th March 2009, 03.37 am
Nick, why don’t you do us all a favor and get rid of your iphone and buy whatever phone is so much more wonderful so we don’t have to listen to you anymore. Thanks!
Steve Jobs 16th March 2009, 03.40 am
Jesse C, please tell us how you determined that the Android is the most advanced OS ever on a phone. That’s just stupid.
Michael 16th March 2009, 07.21 am
I’d rather have MMS than copy and paste, I only need copy and paste about once every 3-4 months while my friends and family send me MMS messages about once or twice a week. All of you must know how annoying it is to try to get those MMS codes to work on AT&Ts website.
LiveTexas 16th March 2009, 07.45 am
MY oh MY…Someone’s Awfully cranky (and behind the times????)
Android IS the future and I see it here is Austin!

The iPhone 3G is the most advanced phone to hit the market since its release. As everyone knows, the iPhone 3G has it’s setbacks just like any other phone. The main ones that irritate iPhone users including myself the most are: MMS, Copy/Paste, Flash, and the ability to run background applications. In just a little less than 14 hours, Apple CEO Steve Jobs will be addressing the Central US about the soon-to-be-release iPhone OS 3.0. That’s 10:00 AM Pacific Time, 11:00 AM Mountain Time, 12:00 PM Central Time, and 1:00 PM Eastern Time. At that time, Steve Jobs will announce what the next move for the iPhone prodigy will be. A heads up on what will more than likely happen is a sneak preview of a new iPhone, as well as new features like Copy/Paste, landscape keyboard, a 3.0 or 5.0 MP camera upgrade, MMS, Adobe Flash support in web browsing, the ability to run background applications, a stronger and longer lasting battery, video support in the camera upgrade, PUSH notification for apps, BlueTooth Tethering, USB Tethering, easier access to WI-FI (allowing users to connect to stronger access points), voice activation for calling, texting, web browsing, as well as voice navigation in the MAPS application with turn-by-turn directions. Stay tuned for further news. A possibility of additional software upgrades could be customizable home screens, as far as custom app icons, category icons (GAMES, PRODUCTIVITY, BOOKS, WEATHER, etc.). That’s what I have to release right now. Tomorrow we find out what Steve Jobs will release. Hopefully it’s everything we hope and then some. Find out tomorrow for everything you need answers for! Expect the new iPhone 3.0 and the OS Upgrade to 3.0 from 2.2.1 users to be released sometime in June or July of 2009.

The G1is horrible compared to the current iPhone and it can NOT be argued otherwise. That being said, the main missing feature of the iPhone is a basic word search for web and email. I’ve been using the iCopy hack for months and it’s great. You DO NOT need a jail nroken phone. If you haven’t been using iCopy, I can see why you want copy and paste so bad, but the real important missing function is “search.” -Oh, and scroll arrows so you don’t have to always use the magnifying glass!
Ryan 17th March 2009, 16.06 pm
Search search search search!!! Scrolling through hundreds-thousands of emails is just lame. There’s no excuse! Search!! Oh yes, everything should have the option of landscape. Everything!!
Copy and paste exists. It’s not effect, but it’s really good!!
Get it already!!
