Review & Giveaway: Accordance 8

Accordance by OakTree Software is one of those massively powerful programs that causes me to think, “Where to begin?” Let’s start with introductions. Readers, Accordance 8 is a highly flexible and in-depth program for studying the Bible, commentaries, and related reference tools—including maps—with the ability to conduct extraordinarily complex searches. Its functions meet the needs of the layperson up through the scholar starting with simple translation comparisons all the way to delving into the original languages behind the English translations of the text. Those two sentences, however, do not do this program justice. As I have stated in the past, I am a fairly new Mac convert, joining the cult family in about May 2007 after nearly twenty years of Windows usage since Windows 3.1. Prior to my switch, my Biblical software of choice was the very popular Logos program—particularly the Scholar’s Library. Logos did the job, but I did not find it particularly intuitive—and no matter how useful a program may be once mastered, if mastery becomes a chore, I lose interest and motivation. This is why I remain a mediocre Photoshop user. Although there are a ton of resources and conventions and blah, blah, blah to learn the program, I do not care for any software that requires the time of maintaining a second husband to understand. This fact does, however, have to be balanced with the reality that complex programs do have a learning curve, but a good developer will minimize that curve as much as possible and thoroughly equip the user with tools to quickly navigate that painful period. I am very pleased to report that Accordance has done this with true faithfulness to continuity with the Macintosh GUI. While I had recently learned that Logos is being developed for the Macintosh platform, and my (expensive) license is transferable, unless something has greatly changed with their user interface, I do not anticipate ceasing use of Accordance as my primary Bible study program. Also, I have my doubts that a long-time Windows developer with its attached baggage of Windows butt-ugly navigation experience will be able to create a product with the look and function of a citizen of the Appleverse.
I have also used the free program MacSword as an alternative to the free PC software e-Sword and promptly gave up. It was confusing and aggravating in addition to being very limited in its available resources as compared to its PC counterpart. I have a well-stocked personal library of theological texts; if it is more efficient for me to grab books and conduct research the old-fashioned way, then a particular study program is not for me. Now despite this admittedly glowing introduction, I will now highlight the major features that I have been road-testing and give my frank assessment of each—good and bad. In the interest of full disclosure, the base software and any add-on modules reviewed were given to me gratis from the developer. I hope I have developed a relationship with my readers from my prior reviews to have earned the trust that this does not influence my opinion. In fact, in this case, I had already learned that my Windows Logos license for which I had paid well over $500 could be transferred to a Macintosh license prior to contacting the Accordance developer, so my motivation for requesting the review was not a burning need to try to obtain sophisticated Biblical study software for free.

Accordance is a program I have been giving serious consideration to for some time. I appreciate so much your review and the chance to win this entry level edition of the software. Good luck to all!

Thanks for the review. So much I haven’t tapped into. I don’t understand why the tutorial DVD doesn’t come automatically with the software. Living in hawaii makes it tough to get to a training seminar.) I have Accordance 8.0 Scholar’s collection but not the tagged NASB. What would adding this help me do? Looking forward to putting the program to better use.

Are you sure you don’t have it? I think it is standard with that collection you have. It is called NAS95S. It gives you great information in the Instant Details Box, and of course is a much more updated translation than the KJV.

I would love a shot at the freebie. I use version 7 right now and was thinking of upgrading.

I switched from (10 years of) PC to Apple the same time you did and have had a similar experience – beta tested Logos for the Mac hoping I would be able to bring my library over. But ended up testing Accordance and was sold, notwithstanding the cost, and the fact that being Australian I have bought just when the dollar is at an all time low!! Have started with the Scholar’s Introductory Module and am planning incremental purchases to build my collection back up. The support from the team at OakTree has already been amazing.
Your review is great – I’ve learned heaps! – thank you so much for the time and effort.

Excellent review (wish it had been available when I was researching which Bible software package to purchase). And yes, Accordance is a sharp choice!

Summary: you spend a lot of money over time in updates and maintenance. Most of the time this is not justified. (Accordance is a great program though.)
As a long term user of Accordance I was overwhelmed by this article. It suffers from the same illness that the otherwise great Accordance website has: Too much detailed information, no clear and precise overviews. Updating is a nightmare with all the available options and packages – I never got it right. In the end I always had to write an email asking what would be applicable in my case and what the best option would be. This is the only prgram that I ever had to do this.
Another setback of the Accordance philosophy: It costs you a lot of “maintenance” money! Updates of existing databases usually cost you, even if they are only correcting mistakes etc. Then they change the database, e.g. for the Hebrew module – guess who pays for it? If you want to stay on top there is a constant drain on your budget …
And with the program itself: Minor improvements are labeled as major ( e.g. 7.1 to 7.2, or 8.0 to 8.1), but at least they are free) and version jumps (like from 7 to
are often not justified – annoying when you think you have to pay for them!
But I appreciate the work done in this article!

As I have only had the program less than a year and was provided the 8.0 update, I cannot speak to this. But it seems to me that if the upgrades offer no benefit to the user, they are not forced to upgrade.
I have my own philosophy on reviews. IMHO 99% of the reviews on the Net on any product seem like they spent all of one day with a product. I just cannot do that. The tremendous detail will not be the right fit for some readers, but with this review, and my prior Toast review, the response has been very positive. I try to write the kind of review I would be looking for when trying to decide on a product. I know and understand that it is too much for some, but this is the niche I have chosen.
Again, I cannot speak to that as I am fairly new. However, to be fair, why would you expect to do this with any other program when there aren’t really choices? Unless I am misunderstanding you, and you mean no other Bible program. If you do mean the latter, that is not my experience. The upgrades and installation of every single Bible program I have ever used has been confusing as I expressed above. However,I know that the developer is very helpful in assisting the user in deciding. It is unfortunate, but I think that is just the nature of this type of program.
I have to plead ignorance here.
And some ignorance here, though I started with 7, and finished with 8, and felt the improvements were significant. If I were a current 7 user, I would not have resented paying for the upgrade to 8. Anything prior to this, I have no knowledge.
Thank you. I hope that Oaktree implements some of my suggestions, particularly the global preference change pet peeve that I mentioned repeatedly.

I just got my scholar intro level and realizing I spent my money in the wrong place, I should have gotten the library intro instead so I am hoping for the give away.

Thanks so much for this review. I just found out about Accordance yesterday. My husband has recently switched to the Mac and has been running his Windows bible study program on the Mac, but this one seems even better than what he has.

What a thorough review! In the past I’ve used lots of PDA eBibles, but decided I would rather work from my iBook. After reading this I think
Accordance would be good at nearly any price, and am happy it is within my reach. I’m happy to find out enough that there is no way I am going to regret my purchase, I just wish it was here now! Thanks, Dizzle!

I own & have used Accordance since version 4.x.
This is the most comprehensive and detailed through review of Accordance (and most any other Mac software) I have ever read.
I even learned some things I did not know about my Accordance program (still at Library 6 I think).
Thanks much for the review & hope to win the giveaway to version 8!

This is certainly the most thorough software review I’ve seen in a while, and certainly for Bible software! Kudos to dizzle and World of Apple for posting it. I now have a place to which I can point people when they want more info on Accordance beyond my own brief demo or the OakTree site info.

I have used BibleWorks for years, but just switched to a Macbook. I am looking for a comparable program to replace BibleWorks that will work on a Mac. I have heard very good things about Accordance over the last couple of years and this review is in line with the other comments that I have heard. I am anticipating getting this soon.

I’m trying to find bible study tools on the Mac that are really user friendly, any other recommendations apart from Accordance?
dizzle 7th December 2008, 22.39 pm
Well so far, Accordance has been the only user-friendly one I have experienced. You might want to try MacSword which is free. I didn’t find it easy, but others in this thread had a different experience, so it might be right for you.
To everyone else, a friend in my online community at TheologyWeb just passed away from brain cancer and we are in mourning and making arrangements for flowers and the like, so I will be doing the drawing tomorrow. I apologize for the delay.
