Accordance by OakTree Software is one of those massively powerful programs that causes me to think, “Where to begin?” Let’s start with introductions. Readers, Accordance 8 is a highly flexible and in-depth program for studying the Bible, commentaries, and related reference tools—including maps—with the ability to conduct extraordinarily complex searches. Its functions meet the needs of the layperson up through the scholar starting with simple translation comparisons all the way to delving into the original languages behind the English translations of the text. Those two sentences, however, do not do this program justice. As I have stated in the past, I am a fairly new Mac convert, joining the cult family in about May 2007 after nearly twenty years of Windows usage since Windows 3.1. Prior to my switch, my Biblical software of choice was the very popular Logos program—particularly the Scholar’s Library. Logos did the job, but I did not find it particularly intuitive—and no matter how useful a program may be once mastered, if mastery becomes a chore, I lose interest and motivation. This is why I remain a mediocre Photoshop user. Although there are a ton of resources and conventions and blah, blah, blah to learn the program, I do not care for any software that requires the time of maintaining a second husband to understand. This fact does, however, have to be balanced with the reality that complex programs do have a learning curve, but a good developer will minimize that curve as much as possible and thoroughly equip the user with tools to quickly navigate that painful period. I am very pleased to report that Accordance has done this with true faithfulness to continuity with the Macintosh GUI. While I had recently learned that Logos is being developed for the Macintosh platform, and my (expensive) license is transferable, unless something has greatly changed with their user interface, I do not anticipate ceasing use of Accordance as my primary Bible study program. Also, I have my doubts that a long-time Windows developer with its attached baggage of Windows butt-ugly navigation experience will be able to create a product with the look and function of a citizen of the Appleverse.
I have also used the free program MacSword as an alternative to the free PC software e-Sword and promptly gave up. It was confusing and aggravating in addition to being very limited in its available resources as compared to its PC counterpart. I have a well-stocked personal library of theological texts; if it is more efficient for me to grab books and conduct research the old-fashioned way, then a particular study program is not for me. Now despite this admittedly glowing introduction, I will now highlight the major features that I have been road-testing and give my frank assessment of each—good and bad. In the interest of full disclosure, the base software and any add-on modules reviewed were given to me gratis from the developer. I hope I have developed a relationship with my readers from my prior reviews to have earned the trust that this does not influence my opinion. In fact, in this case, I had already learned that my Windows Logos license for which I had paid well over $500 could be transferred to a Macintosh license prior to contacting the Accordance developer, so my motivation for requesting the review was not a burning need to try to obtain sophisticated Biblical study software for free.

I’ve had my eye on Accordance for a while now—being a uni student with no income, buying it isn’t as a attractive an option as it could be. Some passing experience with e-Sword a few years back enlightened me as to the utility of such software. As for physical tomes, I have easy access to a slightly dated copy of Strong’s Concordance, but that’s about it. Accordance would be a great help.

Very thorough review. I do wonder why they charge so much for even the basic version? Plus it would be interesting to know how well the basic version compares to using online tools and what different versions really get you. I would love to use quality and useful Bible study software but the cost of this has been out of my range (for a non-pastor).
While I agree that it is great to support Accordance because they have been the only Mac Bible software…I am glad Logos is moving into the arena to provide healthy competition. As a former Windows person, I really liked WordSearch Bible…lower costs and more user-friendly.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. This review did take nearly six months and literally hundreds of hours of time with the program. Good luck!
@Chazz thank you, I don’t publish many review as it takes me a long time to do one as I too don’t like the ones that don’t go into detail. If you are interested in Toast 9, earlier this year I did a comprehensive review here at WOA
http://news.worldofapple.com/archives/2008/07/20/review-toast-9-titanium/
@Dan S, I started to do part of the beta testing and things just glitched up too bad, so I thought I would just wait as I too have a significant investment. When this opportunity was offered, I was thrilled. Now having used Accordance, unless Logos really has changed their workflow philosophy, I don’t see myself using it. Of course I will install it, heck I paid a lot of money for it, but again, unless it is drastically different, Accordance is my software of choice. I have spoke to a Logos representative (sheerly by accident, they didn’t even know I was a reviewer here), and perhaps I may in the future do a review of that program if they don’t mind a comparative review as it would be impossible for me to not compare any other software to this one. It is so Mac-like and seamless. I have my doubts that a Windows developer will be able to pull that off, at least not right away.
My next software review is Mac Pilot 3. If that is something you are interested in, make sure you subscribe to the WOA feed.

Years ago, I had used Logos in Windows but since switching to Mac about 10 years ago I reverted to using my books for scripture study. With Logos about to make their appearance on the Mac platform and my denomination’s software close tie-in with Logos, Accordance would have to really “knock my socks off” to make me spend the money for it. Your review is the most extensive I have seen to date. Thanks.

@Bob H, I think it just might. Besides writing for World of Apple, I am one of the owners of TheologyWeb.com, the owner of PreteristSite and PreteristBlog, and the podcaster behind PreteristPodcast - just to give you an idea of the type of paces I put the program through being involved in heavy theological debate and study. I don’t know the original languages though. There are some screenshots above with links to TheologyWeb member John Reece who just switched to the Mac and has been putting Accordance to good use. He has expertise in both Hebrew and Greek and absolutely loves the program.

Accordance is great. It has something for everyone, with so many different modules available, so many features built in. Yet it’s so handy to be able to go deeper when I need to.

While I use and love Accordance, I also use and love MacSword and BibleTime (KDE-based Project Sword app for *nix). I think you gave MacSword the short shrift. It is a capable program, designed primarily for reading. It has the most beautiful display of any Bible software I’ve tried, yet, it also does decent searching, and some rudimentary other tricks. It’s no Accordance, but for reading the Bible and commentaries, while doing searches, it is excellent. It is a great complement to Accordance (and it does Unicode, which Accordance stubbornly refuses to implement).
I keep both in my arsenal, and wouldn’t part with either.

Accordance presents an ‘embarrassment of riches’ but as you say in your review it is immediately accessible. I have MacSword and the new flash based BibleDesktop on my machine but Accordance is always the default. The modules can work out expensive but there is a wonderful Accordance Forum community which is like having an expert at your shoulder for free! As your familiarity with the programme develops you find yourself saying ‘I wonder if I could…’ and the answer is almost always ‘yes’. The depth of this programme is amazing but don’t let that put you off, you can have a very fulfilling time even in the ’shallows’.

Accordance supports unicode now. I just didn’t like MacSword, perhaps because I am comparing it to e-sword on the Windows side which is far superior IMHO.
For simple searching, I wouldn’t use a client at all, but would use the Bible Gateway or other web-based Bible text repositories.

I have been searching/reading reviews of “Bibleworks vs Accordance vs Logos” for months now and I must say this is one of the most comprehensive (and honest) reviews I have seen.
The one thing that was missing (imo) was the fact that the modules/packages can be very confusing (when deciding on which to get). This is especially true when you compare it to something like Bibleworks.
However, I plan to pick Accordance up once I figure out all the modules I need and how to combine them all in the best possible way. Accordance is quite a bit more expensive than Bibleworks.
Lord willing I will win this giveaway to get me started.
I plan on just running my Logos purchases in vmware. It would have been nice if Logos let us switch our PC purchases over to the Mac version at no charge.

Just a quick note about e-Sword vs. MacSword:
MacSword has no relation to e-Sword at all. It is a program based on the SWORD library from Crosswire (http://www.crosswire.org). There are a number of other free frontends, though I doubt any of them will work well on Mac.
Incidentally, the SWORD Project had the name long before e-Sword.

Thank you Paul. Actually Accordance does have that functionality. From the review, “The user can also customize citation format for both viewing and copying.” I have used that functionality, and it works very well. You can’t copy from the Instant Details box however, and that is something I noted as a definite con. I cannot understand why this is not supported. You can freeze the box, so why not copy from it? Hopefully that might be added in a point upgrade.

@Brian The one thing that was missing (imo) was the fact that the modules/packages can be very confusing (when deciding on which to get).
Yes that is true, but Oaktree is very responsive to inquiries and is very helpful in assisting the user in deciding. Logos is confusing in that way as well.
@Brian It would have been nice if Logos let us switch our PC purchases over to the Mac version at no charge.
Actually they will. Just contact them. I have Logos, but unless there is a significant interface change with the Mac version, I don’t see myself using it as my primary Bible software, but I will certainly install it. In my opinion, making a great Mac program isn’t just about making it work on a Mac, there is a whole different aesthetic and mindset that I think will be very difficult for a long-time Windows developer to master, at least in the short-term.

@Paul oh and thank you for the compliment on the arrangement of the material. That is something I work really hard on. I am frequently involved in theological debate, and learned that you have to present material in such a way that the audience can see your point quickly and in a good flow. If you are interested in the Psystar litigation, I hope you find my organization of that material helpful. My legal background gives me a bit of an advantage in that area.

I can confirm that the prompt responses from the development team do indeed reflect the developers’ relationship with *all* customers. I have sent dozens of emails to Accordance, ranging from fairly simple technical questions to wild feature requests, and I have never had to wait more than a day before receiving specific and comprehensive answers from the appropriate person on the Accordance team. Additionally, over the two years that I have been working with Accordance, a number of my feature requests have actually been implemented, which just goes to show how seriously Oaktree relates to customer feedback.

Thank you for an excellent review! I’ve been using the demo version to try to decide whether or not to take the plunge and buy it. One clarification to a point in your Change Wish-List. You said:
“Only one verse at a time can be bookmarked; same for notations.”
This is true if you use the Option-click short cut for bookmarking. However, you can bookmark multiple verses at once if you first select them in the Bible pane (by dragging over any portion of the verses), then choose the menu item Selection->Mark Selection (or use the Command-7 short cut). The fact that bookmarks don’t persist after exiting and restarting the program is quite unfortunate, though.

This is without doubt the most comprehensive and well researched review of Accordance to date. I appreciate the diligence and objectivity of the author. I teach biblical languages and have used Accordance for now for about eight years and found it to be simply the best software available on any platform. I have Libronix for windows and also the current release candidate for the Mac platform, but Accordance remains my first choice by a significant margin. Thanks again to the reviewer for an excellent job.

Wowza! That’s one review! I’m in transition back to the U.S. from N. Africa and feel that I need to recharge after 23 years overseas. Accordance will be something that will be high on my list to help me do that and I’ll also bookmark this review as a future reference! : ) I came from CMUG over to this review to find a whole different World of Apple (i.e. I never knew this place existed)! So, I’ll be hitting two apples with one arrow when bookmarking your review, dizzle! ; )

This is an excellent review. I have been using Accordance for about 5 years, and I learned several new things that I should have known long ago. I think I would add to the cons of the program, the limitation in free resources. Bibleworks has built up an extensive community that regularly posts helipful resources for free. Accordance would be much more economical if inertia like this could develop.
Excellent review. Thanks!

@Joel have you seen this? http://www.accordancebible.com/exchange/
There is quite a bit of free stuff there. I haven’t done a search to see if there are any Accordance groups that do such things. I remember when I was on Windows, there was a Yahoo e-sword group, but then I heard e-sword cracked down on them.
@Mat convert to the Mac or to Christianity?
@everyone
thank you so much for the very encouraging words. Things like this recharge me to tackle other large reviews.

Thanks for taking the time both to research and write with detail and thoroughness and breadth in your review. Obviously this review wasn’t specifically geared toward a detailed comparison of accordance with logos and BW, but you did mention a few of accordance’s strengths over against logos; i’m curious whether there are any features of logos (at least the PC version you’re familiar with) that you would rate as better than accordance’s? I’m still in the research phase, but close to purchasing one or the other. Thanks!

Hi Jeremy, it has been several years since I have used Logos since I switched to the Mac, and don’t like running Windows at all, so my comparison will be a bit more general and maybe too ephemeral for what you are looking for. I always found Logos difficult to navigate to the different libraries and resources. You had to switch from from one screen to another. The Strong’s numbers were actually embedded in the keyed texts. The interface just wasn’t intuitive. Now back then, I wouldn’t have given any of that a second thought - without turning this into a PC bashing session, that is just how I expected my programs to run. It wasn’t until switching that I found that things could and should be much easier. Accordance is seamless, and for me, the layout is what I really love the most. I love tabbed interfaces. I mourn the loss of NoteTab (an html editor on the Windows side for which I have found no Mac equivalent, NoteTab was free as well). The Instant Details box on Accordance is a marvel. If they implemented the ability to copy and paste from the Instant Details box (on my wish list), it would be perfect.
And, my personal opinion here, not intending to start any wars, but you can’t serve two masters. I have found that many developers (yes there are exceptions, like Adobe) cannot do a good job at Mac versions when their primary market is Windows. It is two different ways of looking at things. Logos may get there, but I really doubt that the first incarnation will be Mac-like. I could be very wrong. I had problems with the beta testing, but also didn’t have the patience to really work through it.
Accordance, once you learn the general philosophy, it is easy to learn the rest of the features as it is very consistent. The developer is easy to reach and work with. Plus, when the rubber hits the road, Accordance has always been around for the Mac. Why wasn’t Logos? Because we weren’t significant enough. Now we are. For me, I like to support those who have stuck with Apple through thick and thin.

Thank you for the detailed review. I was looking at Accordance since I miss having a Bible study software. (I had to abandon my old one when I switched from PC to Mac.) Your review has given me the information–both pros and cons–that I need to make my decision. As soon as I can save the money I will be getting Accordance.

This was definitely the best review I’ve come across on this kind of software. Thanks for being so thorough. It’s very helpful. It’s nice to know that there is good software like this available for the Mac. I haven’t been impressed with other Bible software that I’ve seen and they usually skimp on features and things I’d like to be more effective in my study. This looks very Mac-like and easy to navigate.

Thanks for the review. So much I haven’t tapped into. I don’t understand why the tutorial DVD doesn’t come automatically with the software. Living in hawaii makes it tough to get to a training seminar.) I have Accordance 8.0 Scholar’s collection but not the tagged NASB. What would adding this help me do? Looking forward to putting the program to better use.

Are you sure you don’t have it? I think it is standard with that collection you have. It is called NAS95S. It gives you great information in the Instant Details Box, and of course is a much more updated translation than the KJV.

I switched from (10 years of) PC to Apple the same time you did and have had a similar experience - beta tested Logos for the Mac hoping I would be able to bring my library over. But ended up testing Accordance and was sold, notwithstanding the cost, and the fact that being Australian I have bought just when the dollar is at an all time low!! Have started with the Scholar’s Introductory Module and am planning incremental purchases to build my collection back up. The support from the team at OakTree has already been amazing.
Your review is great - I’ve learned heaps! - thank you so much for the time and effort.

Summary: you spend a lot of money over time in updates and maintenance. Most of the time this is not justified. (Accordance is a great program though.)
As a long term user of Accordance I was overwhelmed by this article. It suffers from the same illness that the otherwise great Accordance website has: Too much detailed information, no clear and precise overviews. Updating is a nightmare with all the available options and packages - I never got it right. In the end I always had to write an email asking what would be applicable in my case and what the best option would be. This is the only prgram that I ever had to do this.
Another setback of the Accordance philosophy: It costs you a lot of “maintenance” money! Updates of existing databases usually cost you, even if they are only correcting mistakes etc. Then they change the database, e.g. for the Hebrew module - guess who pays for it? If you want to stay on top there is a constant drain on your budget …
And with the program itself: Minor improvements are labeled as major ( e.g. 7.1 to 7.2, or 8.0 to 8.1), but at least they are free) and version jumps (like from 7 to
are often not justified - annoying when you think you have to pay for them!
But I appreciate the work done in this article!

As I have only had the program less than a year and was provided the 8.0 update, I cannot speak to this. But it seems to me that if the upgrades offer no benefit to the user, they are not forced to upgrade.
I have my own philosophy on reviews. IMHO 99% of the reviews on the Net on any product seem like they spent all of one day with a product. I just cannot do that. The tremendous detail will not be the right fit for some readers, but with this review, and my prior Toast review, the response has been very positive. I try to write the kind of review I would be looking for when trying to decide on a product. I know and understand that it is too much for some, but this is the niche I have chosen.
Again, I cannot speak to that as I am fairly new. However, to be fair, why would you expect to do this with any other program when there aren’t really choices? Unless I am misunderstanding you, and you mean no other Bible program. If you do mean the latter, that is not my experience. The upgrades and installation of every single Bible program I have ever used has been confusing as I expressed above. However,I know that the developer is very helpful in assisting the user in deciding. It is unfortunate, but I think that is just the nature of this type of program.
I have to plead ignorance here.
And some ignorance here, though I started with 7, and finished with 8, and felt the improvements were significant. If I were a current 7 user, I would not have resented paying for the upgrade to 8. Anything prior to this, I have no knowledge.
Thank you. I hope that Oaktree implements some of my suggestions, particularly the global preference change pet peeve that I mentioned repeatedly.

Well so far, Accordance has been the only user-friendly one I have experienced. You might want to try MacSword which is free. I didn’t find it easy, but others in this thread had a different experience, so it might be right for you.
