Both the US and UK online Apple Stores are showing the 8GB and 16GB iPhone as “Currently Unavailable.”
It should be noted that during the last financial results announcement Apple did state that shortages may happen in the near future but blamed increased demand rather than depleting stock.
Most of this week O2 in the UK has had intermittent availability of the 16GB iPhone.

This sir is a very obtuse statement. How can you have a shortage while simultaneously having plenty of stock? If they never ran out of stock, then why would they have shortages?

John,
I don’t have the exact statement to hand but the impression I got was that Apple expected a shortage but this was due to unexpected demand, not due to them reducing stock to make way for a new model.
Obviously we all have a good idea that Apple is reducing stock on purpose but maybe there is increased demand which is adding to the situation.
