The EETimes has posted an article offering some background information on Apple’s recent acquisition of PA Semi.

According to EETimes’ source Apple was an investor in PA Semi prior to the acquisition.

This was at the time Apple rejected the PowerPC and went with Intel and its expertly manufactured x86 processors to run its computers. This was bad news for P.A.Semi, which was working with a PowerPC architectural license — Apple’s previous processor architecture of choice — and the change at Apple put P.A. Semi in a difficult place.

But according to the technology news site Apple saw PA Semi as an opportunity and wishes to have a new chip designed using the companies in-house design team. Due to PA Semi previously burning through all its venture capital the only option for Apple was to acquire the company and pay off the investors.

It is still unknown what exactly Apple wishes to use the new chip for.
