It appears that a recent spate of updates has suddenly enabled the ability to backup via Time Machine to a USB disk attached to an AirPort Extreme base station.
The feature which was touted prior to Leopards release in October was mysteriously removed from the product features page causing outrage among those who purchased AirPort Extremes.
But it appears that after tonights updates to both the software and AirPort Extreme firmware the long awaited feature has finally begun working.
Managed to get Time Machine backups working via an AirPort Extreme? Let us know in the comments.

I tried this last night and ended up calling Apple support.
Long story short – Apple says they DO NOT support this!
I could not get Time Machine to do a backup on my MacBook – it kept telling me that it had to be plugged in first. This was regardless of whether the MB was wireless or wired to the AEBS. It would recognize the disk as the TM backup disk and the older backups, but it would not actually do a backup.
Some others over at TUAW say they’ve got it working, but Apple told me it is not supported!
