The Financial Times is reporting that Apple will use Macworld in January as the venue to announce an iTunes on-demand rental service, with 20th Century Fox being at least one studio who has already signed up.
The report cites a “person familiar with the situation” who states that the system will work in a similar way to most other rental services. Users will download a complete copy of the movie that will only last a set amount of time before expiring and becoming unplayable.
The report also mentions that Fox DVDs will include a copy protected version of the movie that can be transferred to a computer for watching on an iPod or iPhone.
Rumours of movie rentals initially circulated last year prior to WWDC but failed to come to realisation.
Earlier this year The Financial Times reported that Apple was negotiating with studios for a rental service costing $2.99/film for a 30 day rental.
