Free Custom Ringtones on iPhone Using iTunes 7.4

One reader of World of Apple who wishes to remain anonymous has sent us a quick guide to installing Ringtones on the iPhone using iTunes 7.4 but without paying.

It appears that iTunes distinguishes between Ringtones and iTunes songs using the extension of the file, in this case Ringtones are M4R.

In three simple steps any song can become a Ringtone for the iPhone for free:

1. Using either Windows Explorer or Finder change the file extension of an AAC file to “.m4r”. Either open the file by double-clicking or drag it to your iTunes library, either method will add the song into iTunes.

2. Go into iTunes and view your iPhone. Under the Ringtones section your Ringtone you added should appear.

3. Now sync your iPhone.

This will work with both protected and unprotected AAC files.

Note: For those on a Mac. The easiest way to make sure you are changing the extension is to use Command-I to “Get Info” on the file in Finder. Then change the extension in the “Name & Extension” field to “.m4r”. Finder may ask you if you are sure you want to change the extension.

O2 Adds EDGE to The Mix

One user over at Mac Rumors who is an employee at O2 notes that an internal memo could be indisputable proof that the iPhone is coming to O2 in the UK.

The internal memo (pictured) notes that O2 will be implementing EDGE technologies into their network.

It could also displace rumours that a 3G version of the iPhone will come to the European market.

iPhone Tweaks Noticed During Event

During this weeks Special Event Apple showed off the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, and has published a page demonstrating the feature.

Changes to iPhone interface

But the iPhones on the page appear to have a few noticeable differences (Pictured to the left).

  • iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store is aligned to the right, room for two more apps?
  • Calculator icon is different, same as the new one on iPod touch.
  • World clock icon now shows the same time as the iPhone. Is currently always set to 10:15.
  • Weather icon also appears to change according to your set location. Currently the icon always shows sunny and 72 Fahrenheit, the iPhone featured on the website shows sunny and 33 celcius.
