In late July Apple released Build 9A499 of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard to ADC members. This build represented the first since WWDC and offers very little major change but does implement some excellent visual changes and many, many minor ones.

In this article we’re going to take a look at a few of the changes in the latest Leopard build, it is impossible to show all of them but if you wish to know something in particular then ask in the comments and we’ll endeavour to reply with an answer.
Finder
At WWDC this year the Finder got a major revamp, adding a brand new 3D style Dock, transparent menu-bar and Stacks.
In this build Apple has tweaked all of these features, the menu-bar is still transparent but feels more natural now as the majority of the icons no longer have white backgrounds. Text sometimes feels out of place, especially if you have a dark desktop background and the menus that drop down from selected objects still feel a little too solid.
The newest addition to the Dock is what has already been dubbed “Abbey Road”, Apple has chosen to add a dashed line to represent a separation in the Dock.
The System Preference applications also sports a new icon to match that of the iPhone.
Possibly the biggest addition in this build and the most welcome is the arrival of a Path Bar (bread crumbs) in the Finder window. The Path Bar is disabled by default but once enabled is pretty handy. Objects from the current window can be dragged into a folder on the Path Bar and are moved to that folder.
Time Machine
On boot up Time Machine began slowly backing up the disks I’d asked it to. The process was very long and was cancelled after several GB’s.
System Preferences
The Appearance preference panel appears to be untouched since Tiger as the only colour options are Blue and Graphite of which the system displays neither, opting to Display black only.
Photo Booth
Photo Booth has been growing healthily since the inception of Leopard, now the application features three types of image capture, Normal Photo, 4 Successive Photos and Movie Capture.
Photo Booth also features a huge range of effects of which the majority now feature some level of control over how “intense” they are.

Nice pics. Tx!
What strikes me in the new Dock is the inaccurate 3D effect of the divider between apps and docs/trash. It is drawn like it is in the centre of the screen while it is way on to the right. To my eye that destroys the effect.

Hello,
I am a blind Mac user, and I am very excited by the release of 10.5 Leopard. On Apple’s website, under accessibility, they said that they would be inroducing Braille support for a range of third party Braille devices. Can you pleae tell me if this has been implimentd as far as you cn in this build?
You might want to use the Voice Over Utility to find this out? Hold down FN (if using a laptop) Control Option and F8.
Thank you
Very Best Wishes
James

It sure doesn’t seem that Leopard is sizing up to be a must-have upgrade. There just doesn’t seem to be any amazing or compelling reasons to upgrade. Where are the features that were meant to be kept under wraps so MS wouldn’t copy? Is the OS just not exciting anymore?

Correction: In your own screenshots it’s displaying blue. I’ve got mine set to graphite. Why would the Appearance panel change when it has to display the exact same thing

I notice that all the Leopard screenshots I have seen across the web, no one has take any installer shots. Could you do some? I think the Installer screen looks a bit different since 9A466, I saw a small glimpse in a picture of someones laptop at WWDC installing it.
Thanks

Has PDFKit been fixed? Currently in Tiger, if you open a PDF with two columns of text, and start highlighting text in one column, it highlights stuff from both. The only way to overcome this now is to use option select to use a box to select text, but this isn’t really the same.
The problem isn’t there in Adobe Reader.

Very nice pictures!
I have a question though. On the image nº36, in the Application folder, there is an icon named “Exposé”. There is no such icon on Tiger, does this mean that Apple is preparing a new version of Exposé, when clicking on it does it bring an unmodified version of Exposé?
Thanks for information!

When you change the dock size does the “Abbey road” lines and the reflective base resize?
Is there any plugin to get rid of the reflective dock, shiny application dock dots and “Abbey road”?
-
It may be just me but I think that all these dock new features are just intrusive gratuitous and cosmetic aditions which don’t bring anything good to the user once the initial “woah!” effect wears off.
These new features are not like the gennie effect which is cool and doesn’t interfere with the user experience. These seemed to be just annoying.

Can you add folders to the Finder sidebar?
Is there a way to adjust the icon size in the sidebar?
How is Smart Folder creation handled in the sidebar?
What do the new folder icons look like in the ‘open’ position?
Does Safari have a “New Tab” button yet?
In Tiger, left-clicking on a folder in the Dock opens it, while right-clicking displays it as a menu. In Leopard it looks like this has been replaced by Stacks - but is this true for both left and right clicks?

Looking forward to Time Machine. This is a feature that is needed by average users. Looks simple to implement.

Kinda figured the iTunes 7 look would be “it”. My personal experience with iT7 will color my remark on Leopard. That being so, only the word mistake comes to mind.
Can’t use iT7 ’cause of the keyboard shortcut changes don’t make sense and the overall look and feel of the GUI makes me crazy. Sorry, no Leopard on my iMac G4 FlatPnl (Admin machine). Maybe the iBook will get the makeover ’cause my wife likes the ‘point/clicky’ feel of iT7 (must be that winXP workstaion in HR coloring her views)

Thanks for showing these screenshots! I have 2 questions though…
1. If you’re using multiple Spaces, and you activate Exposé, what will happen? Will it only display the windows in the current space, or more conveniently, show windows from all used spaces?
2. None of the Finder windows from Leopard that I’ve seen so far were in the old-fashioned “spatial” view (I’m guessing this function wasn’t taken out since Finder windows still have that lozenge in the top right corner). I’m just asking because fancy DMGs generally look better in that view, and I want to see if Apple found a better way to implement it in the new Finder.

To all who question whether or not there is sufficient reason to upgrade? Well yes, regardless of what you may think of the “new features” listed on Apple’s web site. Apple have spent 2 years creating new APIs and refining the old ones; speeding up the implementation for the new Intel hardware; enhancing kernel, making it better able to handle the current 8-core desktop Macs and more cores in the future. There are many things we developers are not able to say due to NDAs. What will blow you away is NOT the features like Time Machine (although very good it is); it’s what the developer community will unleash!
Unlike previous OSX releases, developers have had two WWDCs and then some to get their apps ready.
